SARS-CoV-2 has caused a devastating global pandemic. The recent emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants that are less sensitive to neutralization by convalescent sera or vaccine-induced neutralizing antibody responses has raised concerns. A second wave of SARS-CoV-2 infections in India is leading to the expansion of SARS-CoV-2 variants. The B.1.617.1 variant has rapidly spread throughout India and to several countries throughout the world.
In this study, using a live virus assay, we describe the neutralizing antibody response to the B.1.617.1 variant in serum from infected and vaccinated individuals. We found that the B.1.617.1 variant is 6.8-fold more resistant to neutralization by sera from COVID-19 convalescent and Moderna and Pfizer vaccinated individuals. Despite this, a majority of the sera from convalescent individuals and all sera from vaccinated individuals were still able to neutralize the B.1.617.1 variant.
This suggests that protective immunity by the mRNA vaccines tested here are likely retained against the B.1.617.1 variant. As the B.1.617.1 variant continues to evolve, it will be important to monitor how additional mutations within the spike impact antibody resistance, viral transmission and vaccine efficacy.

Horst Seehofer does not want to be patronized when it comes to vaccination, explains the Federal Minister of the Interior his decision not to take Astrazeneca at the beginning of April. A few days later, he receives the vaccine from Biontech. Now the 71-year-old has to go into isolation - he tests positive.
German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer has contracted the coronavirus. The minister has tested positive for the virus and is currently in domestic isolation, the spokesman for CSU politician Steve Alter announced on Monday. He currently has no symptoms of illness. His appointments for this week have been canceled, he said.
Among other things, Seehofer had attended a meeting of the federal cabinet last week. On Tuesday, he presented current figures on politically motivated crime at a press conference in Berlin together with the president of the Federal Criminal Police Office, Holger Münch. It is not yet known where Seehofer contracted the disease.
The CSU politician had been vaccinated against Covid-19 for the first time on April 14. He was eligible because of his age and previous illnesses, the 71-year-old said the following day. He was administered the preparation from Biontech/Pfizer.
Dispute with Spahn It was not initially clear whether Seehofer had already received his second vaccination, but it is unlikely. The Standing Commission on Vaccination recommends an interval of 6 weeks between the two vaccine doses for the mRNA vaccines.
Seehofer's vaccination was preceded by an opinion dispute with Health Minister Jens Spahn. In early April, the Bild newspaper had reported that Seehofer had rejected an appeal by Health Minister Jens Spahn to senior cabinet colleagues to be vaccinated with Astrazeneca's vaccine. "I will not be patronized," he reportedly told the newspaper. Subsequently, the Interior Minister stressed that he was not concerned with an evaluation of the vaccine.
