Main CategoriesThese texts outline variations for halakhic (Jewish legal) purposes, such as obligations for marriage, inheritance, circumcision, rituals, and purity laws. Common lists include:Zachar (זָכָר): Male. Nekevah (נְקֵבָה): Female. Androgynos (אַנְדְּרוֹגִינוֹס): A person with both male and female sexual characteristics (e.g., hermaphroditism or intersex traits). The Mishnah (Bikkurim 4) details ways this person resembles men, women, both, or neither. Rabbi Meir viewed this as a distinct "creature in its own right."

Tumtum (טֻמְטוּם): A person whose sexual characteristics are hidden, indeterminate, or undeveloped (from a root meaning "closed" or "sealed"). Often treated as a state of uncertainty—potentially male or female once revealed (e.g., via surgery or puberty).

Aylonit (אַיְלוֹנִית): Often identified female at birth but who does not develop typical secondary female characteristics at puberty (e.g., no breasts, infertile, sometimes deeper voice or other traits). Subdivided into aylonit hamah (natural) and aylonit adam (human intervention). Saris (סָרִיס): Often identified male at birth but who does not develop typical male characteristics (e.g., eunuch-like, infertile). Subdivided into saris hamah (natural, e.g., no puberty signs) and saris adam (castrated or altered by humans).

Sources vary between six (core categories) and eight (splitting natural vs. intervention-based variants for aylonit and saris). These terms appear dozens to hundreds of times across the Mishnah, Talmud, Tosefta, and later codes.

Context and InterpretationBiological and legal focus: These are not modern "gender identities" or a spectrum of self-expression. They describe observable physical variations (intersex conditions, developmental differences, infertility, or castration) and resolve legal ambiguities in a binary male/female legal framework. Halakha generally defaults to binary rules where possible (e.g., an androgynos might follow male-leaning obligations in some areas).

jns.org

Not a rejection of binary: Traditional views (e.g., from scholars critiquing modern reinterpretations) see these as exceptions, doubts, or medical conditions within a male-female norm, not validation of fluid or chosen genders separate from biology. The Talmud assumes a binary for most people.

Modern usage: Progressive Jewish sources (e.g., Reform) sometimes cite these to support inclusivity for intersex, transgender, or non-binary people today. Critics argue this projects contemporary concepts onto ancient texts.

In short, yes—the Talmud describes additional categories beyond male and female to handle edge cases in Jewish law. These reflect ancient observations of human sexual development and variation, applied practically rather than as social or identity constructs. Primary sources like Mishnah Bikkurim 4 and discussions in Yevamot are good starting points for direct reading.

It's horrible to watch a documentary and just leave with more questions. Was the Mandalay Bay concert shooting a war between the military and the deep staters with citizens in the cross fire?

Three or more networks reported the catastrophic failure of the Waterville damn at 3:45 eastern time all using the exact same language. It’s the one that didn’t fail. Poland and a few other countries seem to be having identical issues. I smell overlord weather rats.

I saw the most recent rant by Alex Jones on big Mikes penis. I am only guessing here and it's only my opinion. What if trials are used to launder money instead of reaching a just settlement. With corrupt judges and prosecutors I think it's entirely possible. Create a show trial where most evidence to excluded and a fake premise is substantiated by a judge or loaded jury. Big mike would win a bunch of money to fund his campaign for president and it would stifle the so called rumors of him being a man. Almost like other trials I have seen.

When everything is given to a society, they cease to be productive. If money loses value and savings and income is lost. Gold is confiscated along with silver. The only people surviving are those that produce and fend for themselves. Seems like this has been done before.

The most successful campaign ever executed by the CIA was to stifle dissent from the American people. The evil chain of vile humans that executed JFK got away with it Scott Free. The only words they had to utter were "Conspiracy Theory". Turning Americans against Americans for questioning the patriotic up standing pillars of the community selflessly serving the public. It's time to send anyone connected with the ongoing criminal enterprise to GITMO to be summarily tried and executed.
