Possibly related side note: there are currently 1,016 military planes in the air (and that's just the ones we can see). Per Monkey Werx, the daily average is around 250.
Interesting times...
ETA on this top post for greater visibility: For those folks using https://globe.adsbexchange.com/ to track aviation activity who are getting different numbers of crafts on screen, I may have discovered a (one possible) reason why.
If you look over on the right at the vertical column of buttons with single letters (on laptop), one is marked P (for Persistence). I had that one toggled on. Here is what ADSBExchange has to say about that button:
Persistence Mode = Leaves planes on screen after signal lost.
I'm unclear on whether that means the planes stay on the screen even after landing or if the planes are still in the air, but stop transponding, yet still remain on the screen due to being tracked under Persistence Mode. Once I toggled that mode off in both of my test screens, the numbers lowered significantly (they're hovering in the 160s right now).
So there you go. I'm sure there are some much more knowledgeable people here who can chime in. I am but a lowly tester. :-)
Again, I'm sorry to have hijacked the newest Q drop thread. ADSBExchange is an awesome tool and I have a hunch knowing how to use it will come in VERY handy in the coming days/weeks.
Is there something I'm missing on adsbexchange? I go there and hit the 'U' icon, but I see way fewer planes than anyone else. The other day I was watching Monkey werx live stream, and where he saw 700+ I saw 200. I wasn't lagged or anything like that, because all the planes I saw on my screen were on his screen, too. He just had over 3x more visible than I did.
ETA: Ohai, first time poster over here. Been lurking for a while, didn't get around to making an account, then SSO hit.
I'm very much an ASBSExchange newb, so I may not have much expert advice to offer. I also noticed sometimes Monkey Werx was seeing much higher numbers than I was seeing.
Here is something you could look at - again, I'm a big ole newb, so take this with a grain of salt. Over on the right (on laptop), you should see 3 tabs: Search | Filter | Columns. Check your Filter and your Search to make sure you don't accidentally have your results limited in some way. You can clear those search results or filters by clicking the Reset button. Ask me how I know this... ;-)
Nope, this happens even if I open a fresh incognito window. Plus I get the exact same results in Brave, Brave w/ Tor window, and Tor browser. I don't get it. :-/
Just for giggles, I opened a fresh instance of ADSBExchange to see how the numbers looked and to compare my settings since I still have a lot to learn.
Interesting comparison - both screens show all the same settings (that I'm aware of - I just clicked through every clickable thing and compared what was toggled on and what was toggled off). Both focused on military craft only. Both focused over the continental US and surroundings. In one screen I have a current onscreen count of 1147. On the newer screen, my onscreen count is 253 and climbing slowly. Not sure what to make of that, but it's interesting to note.
And my apologies to all for hijacking the Q drop thread. Yay Q! Very happy to see some comms!
Yay!
