Here's my take on it, but looking for others to confirm my thoughts.
Assange contacts the government to let them know that an ex-employee is going rouge and is planning to release classified information. That way the government can contact people out in the field so they aren't compromised.
Then the Deep State uses this event as a reason to go after Assange.
Yeah, they used it to take him down, just shows more and more how dark and evil these people are. And how they don't want anyone to openly talk about anything.
