From what I’ve seen, most of time, domestically, he does show as AF2, but not always and it doesn’t necessarily mean anything one way or the other. This seems odd however, and with the ongoing speculation that Pence is compromised, resigning, should be arrested, etc., it’s interesting to say the least.
Agree that the practice is not totally secure. It used to be that we would see the same screen the controllers see. Tech has advanced to the point to where controllers can see one screen while the public sees another. For some reason, this has never been put into practice.

In one of the comments on twitter under this info, someone suggested that Pence was already in D.C. and perhaps the plane went to pick up his family that were in Aspen.
Or hes not on the plane ATM. its only AF2 when he's on it.
Any plane he is on is technically AF2, unless he's on with trump.

They have to designate AF1 & AF2 for POTUS & VPOTUS respectively so ATC can clear airspace for the plane and it’s escort.

Actually, any flight the VP is on would be known as AF2. Same with POTUS.
