not sure as far as cheap. I wouldn't call my setup secure but I went the route of just getting my own NAS and storing encrypted backups on a seperate device. I did this just the other day with my stimulus check because I wanted to detach myself from Cloud companies as much as possible.
You need to get multiple hard drives and keep some of the backups unplugged from your computer except when you are actually backing up to the them. I download everything I see on the internet that I might need later, so I'm approaching 100 TB of storage in external drives.
If you really want files in a "cloud" so you can access them remotely, consider doing what I did. I created a website of my own. I use ionos.com. For $10 a month, you can get a professional plan that gives you unlimited traffic, storage, and emails. You can use FileZilla to upload to your website. I created my own site by downloading the free WordPress software and set it up myself. Ionos can also do it for you. Using FileZilla, you can create directories outside of the WordPress website and store anything you want. You can create little PHP programs to make webpages that will list your files in a browser so you can view or download them to wherever you happen to be. My website is my emergency failsafe offsite storage for my most critical files.
A plus side for having your own site is that you can create all the throwaway email addresses you wish, one for each purpose, even free email accounts for all your friends and relatives.

Mega
Don't use cloud storage if you're worried. Get a home network drive, connect to home network, create your own personal cloud. VPN not included.
As in a HDD?
Yeah, you can get an external network drive
Yeah, I’m gonna order one now. Any suggestions? I see 1 TB on Amazon for around 45 euros, not too bad ?
Depends what you're trying to backup and how big the files are. Anything like this is fine.

So what’s up with DuckDuckGo?
Christ that’s disappointing.
I’ve been using DuckDuckGo, what’s wrong with it?
Fuck sake, nowhere is safe. Any alternatives?
Use StartPage. I've been using that for years.
Mega?
Yeah, I’m gonna order one now. What’s wrong with cloud anyway?
The cloud is just someone else's hard drive that you can't control.
This is probably better option than what I did since its not connected to the internet.
Just create regular offline backups. And remember: one backup is no backup.

I’ve been using duckduckgo and brave for years, good combination. Fuck google.
As in, invest in an external HDD?
Yeah, I think I’ll order that now, thanks.
