My red pill was network television in the late 70's, early 80's. When I was a kid I thought it was strange that ABC, NBC and CBS on their evening news would always have similar "stories", not news, pushing the same agenda item at the same time no matter which channel I was on. Then they started with their "latest polls" to push "stories" to shape the news and to sway your opinion. I knew then we were being controlled.
I attributed it to something different in the 90’s. I attributed it to the newspapers printing something first and then the TV news would pick it up later. I would read the Wall Street Journal and always be a few days ahead of whatever the TV news would run.
