There are currently 300 military aircraft in the air over the US right now. In my experience, that is a lot. At least two dozen are midair refueling tankers. There are also quite a few very large transports as well (Globemaster, Hercules).
Anyone familiar with what would be normal care to comment?
Typically it's around 250, maybe slightly less. On my screen I got up to 316 at one point, with 26 H60 Helis up in the air, which is a lot.
All the tankers are what are confusing me.
Tankers means lots of fighters that aren't shown. Fighters looking for fleeing aircraft?
Yeah typically you won't see the fast air that they are refuelling, if you go to the sidebar and scroll down select the ARA option and will give you the designated refuelling areas.
Note, 68 of those are T6-B Texan II trainer aircraft around three air bases, so I would subtract that from the total. That is a lot of trainers up, though, which is strange.
I am also wondering what is considered "normal." It's been difficult to gauge since keeping an eye on all of this.
