I think Twitter probably has it rigged somehow so that the only people that see trending content are people in their on echo chamber.

Twitter does not get revenue from people going to a direct link tweet, they lose revenue in bandwidth and hosting.
We have to be able to get to direct tweets to vet, anyone can photoshop anything.
I promise if everyone started just sharing screenshots you'd see posts demanding the exact opposite of this.
