I think are variations and deviations on the board (stalling efforts) but the strategy and end-game were immutable in this time line and they knew it too.

Imagine knowing you lost before you start, but carrying on anyway? Why not change your ways and join the good guys? The good guys allow for genuine repentence and embrace.
