It 's from Frank Herberts Dune books.

The character in it isn't a god, it's all optics - but he pulls all the strings of time into himself to reveal the future as a golden path.

He trains humans ruthlessly so that they will not become slaves again first though and then sets them all free.

ok, I don't know the history (thanks for the link) it just resonated with the Herbert character for me (if you've read the books)

Me too and Dune has been around much much longer and personally I think it is a better reference.
