Did you know the original inauguration date was March 4th? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_presidential_inauguration#Dates

20th amendment changed it.

The 6th being the day to count the electoral votes comes from 3 U.S.C. §15.

But obviously the reason for the 6th being the date was because 20 Jan became the inauguration day. So your point remains.
