You are absolutely spot on. I am in the middle of reading Ian W. Toll's Pacific War trilogy, and he addresses this very situation in the first volume. Awesome read by the way. By education I am a Historian, and read pretty much every military history book I can get my hands on, and I am getting a much different take on the war in the Pacific during WWII than I expected. Very Good! Highly recommended.
