I think though, that Trump would actually be #17 because Lincoln was truly the last POTUS to be chosen by thr people, while the Republic existed unbroken. The Rebellion in 1861 broke up the Union for years, even after the war ended in 1865. During Reconstruction, states were still under martial law. So the Union was still fractured under Johnson and Grant. Some states did not have their Electoral votes counted in I believe 1868 and 1872. And with the incorporation of DC in 1871, the Union, the Republic, hadn't been whole since Lincoln. So if it's now been made whole, then Trump was POTUS #17
