Personally, I read the NLT.

I started rereading the story of David about a week or so ago. Start around 1st Samuel 16.

Psalms are good, too.

A lot of people, my church included, also just does the 1 Year Bible, and, honestly, for a beginner that's probably the best since it'll take you on a journey thru the Bible in a year with a Psalm, OT, NT, and Proverbs daily.
