I have been playing chess my whole life and have never heard of this. You also can't move pawns backwards.

And they don't turn to queens, that's checkers.
They do if they make it all the way across the board. This is how the kid won in Searching for Bobby Fischer.

Yes that makes no sense.
It might be with the opponent that you play. Some opponents are too eager to "get you" when they become frustrated that they cannot see your movements clear.
A pawn can be promoted to any piece if it makes it all the way across. 9/10 you'd choose a queen coz... well why wouldn't you? On occasion you'd choose a knight coz it may be just what you need to checkmate from an odd position... but other than that anyone who gets a pawn all the way over is going to pick a queen.
