Given Smith's proclivity to borrow things masonic, it became abundantly clear the mormon church seeks political power. They a want a 'prophet' as president of their church, and a 'prophet' as POTUS as well. Smith even ran for the office as you recall. Romney was as close as they've ever been - they got a taste of the prize. They liked that taste, and will go as socially woke/broke as necessary to get there again.
Mormons were a peculiar people once. And that made them unique. At one point they had a strong(ish) moral compass. Now the church goes with the social flow.
