Excellent, thank you. Reading through the article and the little I know of the customs of the time, there were expected behavioral norms. Gentlemanly, cordial, etc. I saw nothing mentioned about a spear but “... and pull off his hat or cap with his right hand letting it down the length of his arm in a graceful easy posture” caught my eye. In this case, left hand since he held the spear in his right.
Yeah that makes sense, it just strikes me as somewhat of a defiant stance.
Also in the next shot of these soldiers, a number of them are no longer wearing hats and the band behind them are seen to walk over hats on the ground.
Likely because of the wind, but I would have thought these hats would be fitted pretty well to avoid such a mishap?
