My wife is from Moscow. As of when she left there over a decade ago there was much corruption, but it was NOT communism. On the contrary, there was economic opportunity (even if less than America), there was freedom of expression and religion (even if less than America). I am not on board with Putin being a white hat (though I can't discount the possibility), but I think he is currently saying a lot of things I agree with. Instead I think of him as a likely ally.
