The evidence they need is within the machines themselves and is proven through an audit. You can have the best journalists in the world but if the corrupt governors and SOS’s refuse audits of the machines they’ll never have the definitive proof. A corrupt judge will just use that against them and say well if you haven’t audited the machines then you don’t have the evidence.

I still think they handled this situation with Mike absolutely horribly. If they know they aren’t allowed to talk about the machines why the hell wouldn’t they tell Mike before the interview? And when he brought it up they should’ve just said they aren’t allowed to talk about it.
