Kind of weird to think at one point hangings and executions were considered social events. You’d dress up real nice maybe pack a brunch. Then go watch someone hang.

Was the thing to take your kids to watch. See that boy? Steal a chicken/horse and that will be YOU swinging. Likely made a lasting impression. WAY less crime back in those days..
