My recollection is that the woman was on side with the sword in scabbard leaving the man's sword arm free to draw. So they could be on either the right or left arm depending on which was the man's sword arm. They could then easily step in front of her and draw.
However, I've read in history of weaponry that all swordsmanship was done with the right hand/arm. Don't know for sure as I wasn't there, lol.
(us lefties were not exactly welcome in society)
Indeed*. Castle & fort stairways were usually on the right as you faced them to ascend. The advancing swordsman had the disadvantage of the wall next to his sword arm while the defender above had free swing. However, it was all fun & games until the right-handed swordsman met a Danish housecarl and their left-handed axemen...
A. You couldn't get close
B. They swung from the wrong side
C. You were dead

*IIRC, one of the Italian master of arms / instructors taught nobility left-handed swordsmanship. It was an advantage to switch hands in the middle of the fight.
A long time ago, in a galaxy far away, I was a fencer. Our team coach was a left-handed maestro so when we took a lesson from him, we faced a left-handed opponent. We were somewhat of a power in our little corner of the universe and other teams tried all sorts of strategies to beat us. One was to present a lineup of lefties. What a surprise when Coach came up to sign the match card... left-handed.
This might be one of the most interesting replies I've ever gotten to my comment.
You are so sinister
I see what you did there, Dexter.
I see what you did there.
We're da real minority.

My understanding is it is also the reason buttons on coats were different for men and women. Unbutton with the left so you could draw with the right.
My understanding from the advanced fashionistas in the house is that ladies clothing fastening is designed and placed for dressers to be able to be conveniently fastened and unfastened. This works out well for we men...
