They always send two, sometimes three jets in case of an in-flight emergency the best, or 'healthiest' jet will continue on to the event, the other will turn around.
They have maintenance issues often. One was a backup.
They use public relations fly overs as training flights also, so maybe they just wanted another crew in on the sortie
Contingency, if one has an issue and needs to land, there's still one to do the flyover. Might have been the same for the other 2 aircraft but they don't squawk .
Pretty awesome that the b52 from my home state is doing a flyover. Best part of the Super Bowl right there
It was an awesome flyover, all the bombers!
B1 was the third.
A few people here hit the nail on the head. The need a backup for the event. Remember, these things were built a decade or more before we even walked on the moon!
Do they always use these planes for the flyovers? I recall only ever seeing F-16 types
Yeaaaaaa.... Every once in a while I've seen a b2 flyover by itself but a b52? That plane is more than likely older than me (I'm 44) i can't remember ever seeing a b1b as part of a flyover before, that's a little odd. To see them all together like that was REALLY odd.
^^this. They usually have the thunderbird or blue angels fly over. Bombers?? Booms incoming?
Adds up to 55, the Super Bowl number.
B1, B2, and B52.
