Anyway, regarding the fact itself that George accepts donations and has a merch store, I think it's more to do with controlling their segment of the donation economy, which will exist no matter what.

You're right, that's true and it's a valid point. They can choose to shut off all avenues for donations.
I can see how that would be the best way to gain the trust of hardliners. No donations! Be clean and adhere to the Qommandments and not be a paytriot! But in some ways that actually doesn't make any sense. No matter what you say or do, there is a donation economy and people will always participate in that economy no matter what you and I say. A similar organisation mirrored on the left would have no qualms at having donation outlets open, and true confirmed paytriots who as they say impersonate George would've had the flow of money go to themselves.
Sure, George could be that unicorn organisation that wants to be clean and fully rejects donations, and is fully sponsored by other means (Trump?). But what of those well meaning folk who participate willingly in that donation economy? I can see that regular people who aren't too bothered about donating would've felt frustration at not being able to donate. If they want to, they damn will, and don't let anyone even think about insulting them as being gullible!
A plausible explanation is that people would've kept asking to donate anyway, which would end up filling the chat with such queries, so better to have some place to donate to placate that part of the audience. In a way this is a method of taking control of the donation economy so that those who actually don't deserve donations are starved out of that economy, and the well meaning folk have some well to place their well wishes.
Although I remain skeptical since I'm still trying to verify their identity, I don't doubt their intentions too much. They are in a position to acquire high quality footage, photography and information that no one else can, and that is deserving of at least some economic exchange. We're capitalists, not communists, and we have the freedom to decide for ourselves when to reward the privilege of having access to that for our well-earned bucks even if others think we're gullible.
