There's a certain "honor" among comics who will "do anything for a laugh." There is a certain amount of sadness among those who aspire to life as clowns.
Take Robin Williams, for example.
The skilled ones know how to "read the room" and make sure they adjust their bits to the audience. The talk show appearances and crowds are filled with Hollyweird types, many of who rely on these types of folks for their daily bread.
I appreciate much of Ferrell's humor and the characters he plays. Every time he shows up somewhere, he does give it his all.
Not knowing him as a person, it is difficult to make an informed judgement about his innermost thoughts about the material.
But the title of the web site he co-founded says it to these types: Funny or Die.
Not everyone sees the humor and yeah, once you start alienating 50%-plus of the populace, it ceases being funny. That's why to me, the late night hosts such as Colbert and shows like SNL ceased being funny after the 2016 election. There was more anger and hate than actual laughs.
There is also this: Making it as a high-level performer of any kind means you put EVERYTHING and EVERYBODY ELSE aside. Some of these people may not actually understand the material they are performing. To many, it's just another bit, and losing your soul is just another cost of doing business.
Not making excuses or otherwise saying making "fun" of paedophelia is ok.
It's not. No funnier than trying to joke about rape.
