I stopped being an organ donor the minute I learned that they see you as a harvestable body, not as someone fighting for their life. They also intervene in some states - if you die in the hospital and you are an organ donor then they take priority over your organs. Not your spouse, or your mom or dad. The hospital can gut you immediately for the viable organs. The way I see it, the hospital makes money off of your viable organs and is therefore a conflict of interest to my wellbeing. I do not trust the hospital to protect my wellbeing. They could choose to let me die (who is going to stop them? Its way more complicated in the situation; “mistakes” are always made and may be very easy to hide) and harvest my organs because they don’t give a shit about me or my family. They give a shit about their bonuses, recognition and financial wellbeing.
That is why I am not an organ donor.
Which sucks because I would be happy to give my whole body up after I die; in a perfect world with no conflict of interest or infringement on my husbands ability to say goodbye etc.
You said it exactly right. I made decision to no longer be an organ donor after seeing a family member brain dead for over a week but kept “alive” in a warehouse so that the organs could be harvested. It was horrible for everyone around this family member and prevented proper grieving from taking place. And you’re right, it’s all about $$$.
How fucking awful... the loved ones can’t be at peace while their loved one is still “alive.” Theres still so much we don’t know... I pray for a perfect world, soon. The horrors of the modern day will be history.
Said perfectly. In a perfect world, if helping others when I can longer be helped was really the only goal, sure. Too many conflicts of interest when the all mighty dollar is involved. Sort of the same as donating your body to science, you may think “oh I am going to help find a cure for cancer” nope, you are just a tradable commodity being sold at that point.
For some, being a declared organ donor is the ultimate altruistic virtue signaling. For me, my body will head to the crematorium to be incinerated WHOLE. I never thought of having a legal document saying that I am not an organ donor under any circumstance, but I am now going to look into it.
Your concerns about the medical field's integrity and true goals echo mine. I have already had other family members worry they maybe declared brain dead prematurely to allow the harvesting of their parts & pieces and to please make sure they are indeed 'dead' first. Especially those of us with a rare blood type. Sad.
Exactly yeah. I don’t think that everyone is seething and ready to use my corpse for cash lol but I do know there is a percentage that will. I grew up in Oregon and also lived in California - I don’t trust a doctor to sew my wounds LOL
I know there are only a few bad apples in the barrel. Thank you so much for your service

Smart move
