It isn’t working for shit. Not enough generation capacity. I’m sitting here in the Houston area without power like hundreds of thousands. Not rolling blackouts. Completely out. Might get power back tomorrow. Pool pipes and well head will likely freeze and break. I think I was able to drain all of the water from the house pipes to prevent those from freezing. Fingers crossed.
And the website of our local power distributor isn’t working.
I’m on a well. I also don’t have a home generator. No power means no water. It also means I can’t circulate my pool water to prevent it from freezing. We can’t drain our pools in the South, like here in Houston at least, like you folks up North. I did have the water running mostly everywhere before the power went out. I finished dumping everything else like the line to the ice maker this morning. Fingers crossed that the house pipes will be okay as they should be empty. My well head and above ground pool pipes are another problem. I do have my well head wrapped as well as I can with insulation, trash bag, furniture blanket, and another trash bag.
Beyond that I do have a small generator and am able to make coffee and cook with a toaster oven. I’d rather not be outside trying to grill. My grill is on the dark north side of the house and being a kamado it’s impossible to move. I also have a natural gas fireplace so we’re huddled around it.
I've done that since I was a kid. My dad always kept all sinks dripping and the tube, I know do it in my own house. Crazy part is it's not bad here in DE yet!
Yeah, but a lot of our power comes from the wind turbines in west Texas. Due to the ice they can't run. We are having rolling blackouts right now. Where I am, I'm getting 45 minutes of power and then 45 minutes without power. So we are trying to do stuff around when we have power lol.
The second it comes on, I'm starting a load of laundry or fixing some food lol
We did recently get a generator, so my husband is getting that set up right now.
Whelp - that sounds like a damn good reason to move to Florida instead of Texas.
Tons of oil and natural gas... and your moronic politicians rely on "renewables" that don't fucking work... Brilliant. My suggestion: shoot them (in minecraft).
To be fair, this is highly unusual circumstances. I'm 33 and have lived in Texas my entire life. This is the first time we have ever had rolling blackouts like this in my area, at least. Our winters are usually very mild and we haven't had snow like this ever in my life. We're lucky if our snow sticks for a day or two.
And I'm sure some people's houses have gas heat here in Texas. My water heater is heated with gas. We mostly use air conditioning down here. Our winters are pretty short and mild. Most years winter lasts maybe 8-10 weeks.... and has some warm spells mixed in. This is all very unusual.
Florida is a nice state, and they don't have a mask mandate. But I think our economy may be better. Just don't use this one incident to deter you hahaha. It's very very rare. And the 45 mins without is really not a big deal. I'm watching movies on my laptop while I fold laundry.
My liberal boss keeps telling me it’s climate change. He is supposed to be smart. I told him everything comes in cycles and we’re in the midst of a grand solar minimum. I dont know how many times I told him we live on a dynamic planet.
Power is out because of 'high demand' in most of Texas right now. Something to do with ERCOT. I've lived in Texas my whole life, these rotating power outages seem fishy.
It's because our wind turbines can't run. We are the 5th largest producer of wind energy in the world. At least that's what I've heard. I don't know. My husband is getting our generator set up, so we can at least have some power during the blackout times.
Rotating feeder outages helps lessen the impact to everyone in general. Emergency services and hospitals are the last to go. It’s an effort to reduce the chance of a full on blackout. Demand tonight will be roughly 20,000 MW above capacity so we have to shed load to keep the frequency from deviating too far from 60Hz. If the generators become unstable everything cascades. The Obama admin had a big role in this with pricing coal plants out of existence and wind is too unstable. The next 24hrs will be critical

Our power was out 9 hours today. Praying it stays on.
Can u get the generator close enough to the well to attach one of those big metal lamp lights to keep well head warm?

JJ Watt left Houston and took their Watts with him? *shit comment. Great opportunity
LMAO. Good one!
praying for my Houston pedes

Ditto
We are in Dickinson and we never lost power..... Guess we should be very thankful....

Just learning this fact tonight - as I sit in a DFW suburb in the dark, with kids and dog while it’s 8 degrees outside.

That’s what happens when you rely on the wind and sun for power.
Welcome to Californication. Tis global warming with no back up. Purposeful, I believe.
Been without power for 24 + hours.
