The human fetal heart begins to beat at 22 days post conception (3 weeks). But we date the pregnancy from the first day of the woman's last menstrual cycle, usually about 2 weeks prior to conception. Thus, the lay advice that the heart beat is heard at 5-6 weeks into the pregnancy.
