Na, it's just 'cause the government tried to tell Facebook you gotta pay our shithouse journos for the articles and you can't reprint shit with impunity. Facebook said piss off.
The government here has a stupid tendency to whip it out and demand whomever they are up against to marvel at the size of it.
9 times out of 10, the accused has the bigger package, so the government is just left looking like somebody holding their limp dick. Crude but accurate.
Not really.
This is actually a positive thing, with a government acting positively. Not everything governments do are bad.
This is a positive step. Just like facing off with China was a positive step.
Disagree. This was simply about the government squeezing money and tackling a beast they don't understand as is often the case when it comes to tech. I don't have Facebook and detest it, just so we're clear.
Not being a doomer or trying to be cynical. But all this amounts to is Facebook not being able to present articles themselves but has zero effect on users propagating the same articles which is what will inevitably happen anyway. You can't sue the post office for the the contents of an envelope.
FB took away ad revenue and clicks directly from news organisations, that's all this was about.
I may come across "the government can do no good" but in this instance, this is what I see.
agreeing with the dingo....
People will still flock to the same names and brands they got their news from to begin with. The same organisations that already are questionable.
The only difference is, now they'll suffer the minor inconvenience of having to consume it via a web browser instead of directly through their feed. There might be some minor benefit of not having everything appear so one sided, but the MSM often does that on it's own anyway.
Point is, Gov wanted to tussle with Google and Facebook (y'all remember Google slapping that little blurb before your results a few weeks back?) and tell them the free lunch was over. Ultimately, Facebook said piss off and the truth is, they don't need the MSM. They control what people talk about.
It's good less power to Zuck, it's good the free lunch is over. I hate Zuck and as said, detest Facebook. However, hate him as I may, Zuck dropped a pearl of wisdom - the MSM isn't worth paying shit for.
