Hey! That sounds amazing. First off, thank you. I find this information beyond interesting and I could talk about this forever.
Owen Elkins should show kin ending up in Georgia, Toombs county. My grandfather was Joseph Lee Elkins he died in 1983 in NJ. He was in WWII. His daughter (my mother 1957-2012) name was Jaye.
23andMe has been crazy for me. I found out both my sisters weren’t my dads and he had another daughter neither of us knew about. He was surprised to say the least.
Another good family mystery is that my father was adopted by his stepfather, was born (Robert Allen May) 5/13/44 (Mother Eleanor Garrison, died 2000 age 102) bio father was named Leonard May. I know ZERO about him and neither did my dad. I heard Leonard was British. My Dad was from Princeton/millstone/grovers Mills (same farm as featured in “was of the worlds” radio broadcast)
I find it fascinating that I have a paternal lineage that I know nothing about.
Curious if you can figure out my adopted last name.
If I was trained similarly and had the spectrum chops to do Mariana Trench level dives I’d do it all day :)
Thank you In advance. You’re making a stranger and his family very happy.
Have a fantastic weekend. Hope the weather is good where you’re at. I’m in SoCal so as far as weather, I can’t complain hahah
I just saw your message a few minutes ago (12:20 AM EST), so I looked for Leonard May. I found his World War II draft registration. His full name was Leonard Allen May. He was born 3-23-1912 in Kidderminster, Worcestershire, England and was married at the time to Eleanor Garrison. He had brown hair, blue eyes, and was 5'7" tall.
The tombstone has the wrong birth year, and he had married again. There is a copy of his obituary, which gives his parents' names.
Are you saying that Robert is your grandfather, and your father was adopted by Robert? Just trying to figure out what you need to know. A Y-DNA test will help you find the last name of your real male ancestral line. If it's an unusual last name, you might be able to do some detective work and find out who was around with that last name at the right time.
Robert is my father. Leonard is my biological grandfather. This is amazing. I can’t thank you enough.
Allen is my fathers middle name as is mine. I’ve never known anything about him. He had two sons, Gary and Robert then I don’t know what happened, went to start a new life?
I wonder where his family is? I’m blown away by this really. The article mentions California, where I’m at and that he died in Maryland.
Good morning. I can’t begin again to thank you. My head is spinning. I have three uncles and 9 cousins!!! I tried calling the VFW and left a message. All those awards! The cross de guere with palm seems rare? He literally lived an hour from me my whole life :(. No one knows the story; what happened. My father unfortunately died last April of a heart attack while awaiting bypass due to COVID times. I don’t have many people to share this with.
Thank you for all your time. Any other info you could find would be appreciated and I want to send you some money, you deserve it. I love this kind of stuff and you just opened an entire chapter. Thank you
Get you an account with Ancestry, and you can find a ton of info. The people in England don't seem to have done as much with genealogy as we have. You'll need more than the basic account with Ancestry to access records over there. You might be able to trace your other lines here in the US further back. It's a never-ending detective story.
Money would be nice, but we can't be doxxing each other. So just be happy and start researching. One site by someone I know with some interesting stories of research is WikiKin. There's a contact page, and you can tell him I sent you there.
