Israel originated during WW1.
After two years of war, the Allies were losing WW1. A British person approached their government and asked if they would like help from the Americans and they said, yes, but how and why, basically.
The response was that it would be organised if the Brits would agree to let the Jews have Palestine and they agreed - not that it was theirs to give! The Americans joined the war and the rest is history. For confirmation look at the Balfour Declaration.
