I am someone who has been training for many years in self-defense. I look at every situation with skepticism and wariness. To me this guy would have put me instantly on guard. His whole approach was aggressive. From my perspective I would have been both initially wary and increasingly calculating "fight or flight." My main thought process would have been, "will this guy try to physically attack me if I try to extricate?"
You believe your reaction would have been different. I believe you. Not everyone looks at the world retaining that inkling of self-preservation at all times. But many military do. I'd bet someone as brave and militarily accomplished as an astronaut does.
I really do believe this is a situation of confirmation bias, possibly on both of our parts. I will say I do not see what you are seeing at all, and it isn't because I am not trying.
