Texan. I will explain. Many Texans have the option of choosing their power provider. Griddy allows us to buy power at wholesale prices. You pay a membership fee and that is how Griddy makes their money, but the power cost is passed through without any markup from Griddy. Ordinarily if you use Griddy you’d pay less than a retail power provider. I considered going with Griddy when I last picked a power provider, but instead went with the cheapest retail provider I could find at the time. Not that it mattered much for me, because my power was out.
But, when wholesale prices skyrocket, you really need to turn stuff off or get hit with huge bills.
Whoever got hit with this bill likely received notifications about the price. They had a choice. Turn stuff off or get hit with a huge bill.
Edit: With a retail power provider, your rate is set, no matter what wholesale prices do. Is it higher than wholesale, yes. Is it guaranteed, yes.

Well said.
Supply and demand. If they don’t hike the price supply will drop like crazy. Would you rather pay super high rates for some lower, or have zero power?
Apparently some don’t realize, price hikes are a natural part of the free market. Without them there is no mechanism for curbing demand.
Whoever downvoted you needs a lesson in economics.
