Some do look rather mannish, but some are feminine looking. A couple of things to keep in mind though - styles change and some of these old styles look very constricted and even bizarre to us today. Also, many of the women pictured had short hair, which always makes a woman look more manly. (I do wonder why the favor short hair) Thirdly, several of the photos were taken when the women were rather old. Age takes it's toll.

Hair put up. Short hair was a shame prior to 1920s. To have your long hair out and flowing was seen as whoreish.
Interesting, since the bible says a woman's long hair is her glory.
Yes, but she doesn't show it to everyone. Also, keeping it braided and put up kept it from getting super tangled.
