Well they didn't have ELECTRICITY. And as far as my little mind knows, there is no phone that does not need electricity to be functional. Either charged or direct. Do you know of any phones that run on water power that these folks living in trailer might have had? I mean it doesn't say they didn't does it? Come on.
Phone lines used to be able to be powered by a back up generator from the phone company when it was normal that everyone had a a DC able phone. There are not enough of these in service to justify the cost. Does that mean that every landline station does not still have a back up generator? There is probably some still out there. But holy shit are we splitting fine hairs here. Of course I haven't had a landline that was DC power able in over 25 years, so maybe there is more stations with back up generator than I know.
