There isn’t such thing as a tradition that really isn’t important. The military does not do gray areas. If the guy is supposed to be there, that’s it. He is there.

They don’t make mistakes. This isn’t some NG guy standing post in an armory parking lot. This is the White House. The super bowl of ceremonial marine corps billets.

Something is going on. No idea what. But all these “mistakes” in customs and courtesy doesn’t add up. There are no mistakes.
