Yes, this is true.

However it's also possible that the weakened magnetosphere allows for this kind of human-manipulation to occur.

Perhaps the magnetosphere at normal/higher strength would prevent, or at least reduce the effectiveness of, human manipulation of this magnitude.

Just some thoughts.
