The USA has traditionally had amazingly cheap fuel. There are a few other cheap fuel countries such as Saudi Arabia but most of the world pays through the nose for petrol/gasoline.
I'm in England and the average fuel price today is 1.22 British pounds per litre. There are roughly 4 litres to a US gallon.
1.22 x 4 = 4.88 GBP = 5.88 US dollars per gallon
Yes it's almost six dollars per gallon here.
I have no idea if the price has risen recently because I have been locked in my house since December. Last filled up before Christmas.
