Yes — I remember reading that too. Lack of andrenochrome causes black eyes....

That sounds untrue but I have been wrong. This and many of the black eyes we’ve seen are much more akin to black eyes from punches. I could see maybe a punishment from their superiors, or marks of dead men walking, or even wives learning about the blackmail against them, something like that. For sure black eyes and walking boots are code for something.
