EDIT: Found a source saying lowercase s for senator is OK when not used as title before name. Sorry for the "misinformation" guys!!! :p
I actually looked it up online and read that titles like that are only capitalized in front of people’s names. Maybe my source was wrong or I misread it. Either way I trust a self-proclaimed wordnerd who’s looked at this particular thing in context more than my own brief research into general rules. Will edit.
I must apologize, I found a different source, and THAT one confirms "senator" can be lowercase when not used as a title, so you weren't mistaken after all. D'oh!

LOL not even slightly, Lee. After years of conditioning I feel in casual email and online message forums, people are in a hurry nowadays, typing on a stupid phone, no time for stuff like capitalization, punctuation, etc. The editor in me found it a challenge to drop the OCD compulsion to make everything right, but it was worth it :)
