There was massive flooding at the time and the dam had some structural problems, but they were over-inflated by the media.
There were some photo-shopped images of the dam that were passed around at the time, but of course they were faked to make it look like the dam had shifted badly. Actual shift was a fraction of an inch, which is still a lot.
The 3 Gorges Dam is stable now. It won't be going anywhere any time soon.
One thing I will point out is that, despite my dislike for Chinese engineering or construction... the Chinese have emerged as the biggest, most prolific builders of hydro-electric dams in the world. They have that skill down.
