When my sister was about 5 years old she wanted to be called Joe because she was crazy about Little Joe on the TV show 'Bonanza'. It didn't mean she wanted to be a boy, just that at that point she identified with a TV character who happened to be a guy. Good thing we grew up in an era when parents knew not to make a big thing out of something like that and to wait for the phase to pass, which it did.
