I can only assume here, but I would think it has to do with the emotional nature of the GN issue, frustration, and a long persisting feeling of needing to get away from GAW for a while (or some combination thereof). The temptation to respond to these posts might be overwhelming if he kept his account, too.
Just speculation, but deleting his account could have been encouraged by the other Mods as well. "Start fresh" or "take a break," etc, could have been the reasoning -- or any number of reasons, honestly.
