I just researched this recently as I was looking for the reason that as a confirmed Lutheran, I didn't know anything about the book of Revelations. I drifted away from the Lutheran church as it became more liberal. But I didn't remember any sermons about it, or reading any lessons from it - yet, so many evangelicals and others here in the South know so much about it.
Martin Luther translated the Bible directly from Greek and Hebrew texts into German, being careful to use the correct German so nothing would accidentally get translated incorrectly. He would go into town and learn the everyday German being used to ensure he was translating correctly. In the process of translating the New Testament, he didn't trust the content of 4 books and he put them at the end. He really doubted the contents of Revelations so it is last.
Apparently, the bible of the time being used by the Catholic church had been re-written over the years and was not true to the old texts. Thus, why he wrote a new version.
That is not true. we have some of the oldest surviving texts of the bible
Codex Sinaiaticus and the Codex Vaticanus, 4th century AD.
they're pretty much the same bible that is today, no edits. We have fragments of the bible going back thousands of years.
Luther tried to edit the bible. He tried to cut James and Revelations out of the Bible. He tried to edit the words of the bible by saying that we are saved by "faith alone" when alone is no where in the text of the Bible.
