Nat Turner was an amalgamation of Haitian slaves.
There is a lot of misinformation and purposeful disinformation about these terms. The American founders never considered the possibility that the People would directly vote on anything. It was always understood that there would be representation of some kind. The question was how to structure it.
Therefore, this idea that "republican government" merely means a democracy with hired guns is nonsense. It is promoted by the tyrants who want people to think that is what it means. It does not, and it did not to the founders.
Jefferson said that democracy is mob rule. He did NOT say it would be ok for the mob to hire mobsters to do their theft for them. Franklin said democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what is for dinner, but a republic is when the sheep has a gun to defend his position. He did NOT say that a republic is where the sheep hires a donkey or elephant to represent his interest.
It is all about NATURAL RIGHTS. It has nothing at all to do with representation. The idea that the new form of government would have government representatives was a given. They already had that for hundreds of years in the British parliament and the American colonies' and states' legislatures. That was not the debate.
The debate was over the proper role of government as it relates to the RIGHTS of man.
They structured the federal government with 3 branches, and only gave it limited powers, reserving the remaning powers to the states and the People.
They had the representatives in the House elected by local districts, the Senate elected by the state legislators (who were directly accountable to the local population), and the President by electoral college, NOT popular vote.
They understood that a democracy is tyranny of the majority. The Bill of Rights was insisted upon to further restrict the powers of the federal government.
They were not concerned with the majority of the People directly voting on things that would trample the rights of the minority of the People. They were concerned with the majority of the People putting pressure on the representatives to get THEM to trample the rights of the minority of the People -- something we see all the time today, although today they are trampling on the majority, too.
The easiest way to think about it is this:
Democracy = majority rules (whether by direct vote or through represenatives)
Republic = majority rules (whether by direct vote or through representatives) SUBJECT TO a higher authority (Constitution) that PROHIBITS the majority from trampling on the rights of the minority -- and the ultimate "minority" is the individual (no matter race, sex, age, religion, ideology, social or economic status, etc.).
But that's extremely dangerous to their democracy.
It is dangerous to the 2 Corporations that run the US.

or, failing that, start over again.
The number of times the phrase "Republican Government" appears in O.G. docs would make lefties have an aneurysm if they ever bothered to read them.
Both definitions are incorrect.

THAT is what the American founders meant.
