As far as WW1 and WW2 are concerned, there are sites that have more insight than you'll find in places like wikipedia and government sites. The Zero Aggression Project site is one of my favorites for history. WW1 and WW2 were both wars essentially fought over nothing, and we entered them not for moral reasons, but for 'empire building' purposes:
