Was talking about the “great equalizer“ aspect with my wife the other day. This came up around her gripe: “I'm sick of shows and movies pretending that a 100lb woman can fight off and crush some 6'6 goon.“
My counter theory is “normalize the fantasy“ to foundationally chip away at the equalizer argument.
This is a dumb story I’m about to tell, but it reminds me of when I was in high school and my girlfriend and I would thumb wrestle. (Told you it was dumb)
Anyway, she was all ‘girl-power’ rah rah, and you know, no problem with that. But she would challenge me over and over, and of course, she would always lose.
I finally asked her why she kept wanting to thumb wrestle and she said she would ‘get me one day.’ I told her she wouldn’t and to prove it, I would let her get me in the best pin she could possibly manage. She agreed. I asked her if she was satisfied with her hold. She said yes. I told her to start counting to 3. Before she could even mouth the word “1” I was out.
She looked dumbfounded. She couldn’t believe it. She actually cried a little bit and I apologized thinking I had done something wrong. Later on, I realized some of it was her coming to terms with the fact some of the ‘just as strong as men’ garbage the media was telling her was a big fat lie.
There is indeed differences between the sexes. That’s okay. We have different strengths.
