The mark was a forced mark of allegiance to Nero by dabbing ashed on your forehead in order to gain entrance to the market.

If you didn't do it you could be put to death. Without it you couldn't buy or sell anything.

A more modern, hardcore version would be adrenochrome in order to get rich and famous.
