Online dictionary lists three definitions for "acquit".

I think perhaps the archaic definition fits here:

ARCHAIC: discharge (a duty or responsibility). "they acquitted themselves of their charge with vigilance" Similar: discharge, execute, perform, do, carry out, effect, implement
