Crimea was given by Khrouchtchev to Ukraine to mark the 300th anniversary of the reunification. I don't know the full story behind it, but you don't give away your land with your people in it just to mark whatever ceremony. That's the danger of a communist regime where your identity doesn't matter and you are gave away like a gift.
